 "Dreml, I am disappointed" 2010-03-14

Dremel MM80P Multi-Max Grit Sand Paper - Paint, 18-Pack

I like the product itself. The sand paper works well. I am however disappointed that Dremel is not making available the ability for a long time Dremel user, like myself, to buy separate packs of the various grits. I find myself with lots of 240 grit but no 80 grit. I refuse to buy the 6 pack or the 18 pack anymore because I don't need any more 240 grit. I have resorted to using old fashioned sand paper with a sanding block, Yuck! The people who have taken over Dremel don't seem to be catering to the consumer like they used.

- Safe cutting - unique high frequency osilation only cuts hard materials, so the users hands and fingers are much safer than a saw that rotates.
- Smooth running - there are no fast spinning parts or alternating blades creating movement of the tool, only a high requency oscillating action resulting in no kickbacks.
- Sonicrafter throws a very low level of dust whether you're sanding, cutting or scraping.
- Up to the edge and corners - with Sonicrafter you can get into difficult to reach areas that is not possible with a corded saw or jigsaw or even most sanders.
- High sanding capacity - with virtually no force or downward pressure required.

i used the sonicrafter for several weeks before writing this review. i have a remodeling buisiness. it has been a tremendous time saver. the grout remover works like a dream. i have found the replacement blades to be much faster than the blades that come with it. the sonicrafter is a heavy duty well made tool. i have used it for three and four hours at a time. it gets warm but does not over heat. if the blades are not put in exactly right, they will work loose. i have no complaints with the sonicrafter it has saved way more than what i paid for it. well worth the money.

 "unacceptable customer service at US Factory Outlet" 2010-03-08
By Roger Warde (Red Bank NJ)
Firstly, let me say that I don't fault Amazon.com from making a profit. I don't know what arrangements are made between the retailers that list their wares here on amazon.com in regard to compensation but, I don't believe we the consumers should have to be penalized for using Amazon. I also don't appreciate getting a curt response to my question about why I paid more for this tool using amazon.com then if I had gone to the US Factory Outlet and ordered it there. I was told that because they had to pay Amazon.com, they added it to anyone that orders through Amazon. I realize that its only a matter of 2 or 3 dollars, but thats not the point.

In regard to my purchase of the Rockwell Sonicrafter with the 37 piece accessory kit; I have to say that it exceeds my expectations. Its a great tool and its a good value. I only wish that I didn't have to deal with people that seem to care so little for their customers.

 "Must have tool; but, has design flaw" 2010-02-28
By Fred Klintworth
I've had my tool for over a year now and have used it frequently for carpentry jobs. To me it's indispensable. But, in my opinion there is one significant design flaw: the method of attaching the blades. I'm getting ready now to order another one of the wood/metal cutting blades because the star-shaped hole where it is secured has wallowed out. That's because the blade keeps working loose, no matter how tight the retaining screw. Except for this, it's a great tool.

I went looking for this tool on Amazon after seeing a "How-To" video with Tom Silva of This Old House demonstrating how to install a lamniate floor. I was dreading the task of triming the door casings with hand tools. When I came across the Rockwell Soni-crafter I recognized it as looking like the tool that Tom had been using without mentioning its name. (Well, it might have been the Fein Multi-tasker, which is too expensive for my home projects usage.) Even for my immediate limited usage I consider it was well worth the price. It made the job of triming eight casings simple, accurate, easy and fast. I will undoubtedly have more use for it from time to time.

 "Rockwell Sonic Crafter" 2010-04-06
By Beaver7
I bought the Rockwell Sonic Crafter about a year ago because I needed a "multi-tool" type device and thought that the Sonic Crafter looked like a more affordably-priced alternative to the Fein Multi-Master. I have several older, Rockwell Delta power tools which have given excellent service, so I chose this Rockwell tool partly based on that experience. Mistake. As others have noted, here, Rockwell evidently "ain't what it used to be".

The Sonic Crafter worked well for a while, performing light tasks such as notching baseboard, cutting wiring access holes into sheetrock and detail sanding. Then, as if on cue (right after I spent $50 on replacement blades) the trouble began. As has been noted by many other reviewers here, the issue involves the mode of blade attachment. At first, the attachment allen bolt would only rarely vibrate loose. Now, the tool has been rendered totally useless by the fact that this bolt vibrates loose within less than a minute EVERY TIME I try to operate the tool, regardless of how tightly I cinch it down or what speed setting I'm on.

It's a shame that Rockwell is apparently disinterested in rectifying this obvious design flaw (too many people are complaining about this for my experience to be deemed just a fluke), because the device is otherwise a decent, reasonably-functional tool. I am not a contractor, so my Sonic Crafter received only light-to-moderate use before this problem rendered it utterly worthless.

I plan to attempt contacting Rockwell about this but, given the stonewalling others have reported running into in that regard, I am not particularly optimistic that satisfaction will be forthcoming. Sorry, but I expect better quality and greater longevity for almost $200. I'm unlikely to buy any other Rockwell tool in the future and advise other, prospective, multi-tool buyers to cross the Sonic Crafter OFF their list of candidates.

 "no longer a multi-tool" 2010-04-03
By Joshua Amato (Northeast Corridor)
Bought this a year ago, first day my partner striped the hex and now only the cutting tool is on there and there is no getting it off. Well we might be able too if we gave it some time.

We have continued to use the tool mainly for cutting sheet rock, and mainly type-x, needless to say the blade is dull. Every time anyone goes to use it cut some trim or any wood, a small fire starts.

And then there is the noise, WOW! Very loud!

I give it three stars, I would buy it again, I would love to see a better way for holding on attachments, changing the hex. More refinement, to reduce the noise. Over all the value is just good.

 "Excellent tool for the price" 2010-03-04
By Allan (Georgia)
I have used this tool to cut 2x4 TYP deck boards for replacement, to cut out rotten soffit and trim, and to make precision cuts in a very expensive knotty alder bar to provide clearance for a wine cooler. This tool performed competently at all of these tasks. I am actually finding more and more uses for the tool. There is a learning curve for those who have not used an oscillatory tool before and it is easy to overheat or break blades. The key is to let the tool do the work without forcing it.

The only reason I could not rate it at five stars was that the speed control failed. Since I received this as a present and did not have the receipt, I thought that I would be stuck with a single-speed tool. But after a foray through very poor customer support in the far east, my wife was able to get someone here in the States who spoke English. They promptly sent a complete new kit and instructions for returning the defective unit. Once you get to the right people you can expect good customer service.

Bottom line - this is a great tool for less than half of what you would have to pay for the German original.

So far, so good. With the grout blade, it did a fine job. I've used the Fein Multimaster many times and we all know of its proven track record, but the price is way out there. The Bosch seems to be up to par, and being cordless is an added plus.

 "very pleased" 2010-03-03
By John W. Orlandella
I have been looking at the multi-tools for quite a while. I chose the Bosh because they make very dependable tools and also because I prefer to work without a mess of cords under foot. I have used it to shave ceiling tiles with ease and also to trim the ceiling channels in place without having to pull every thing apart. If you need to trim an eight of an inch off sheet-rock, it will do it with no mess. I was able to cut away an old cabinet without undoing the drains and plumbing. I can cut hard to reach areas that could never be done with any other tool. This is not going to replace a saws-all and its not going to zip through steel and lumber like one but it will work in tight areas that no other tool will. A week after using mine I saw a cordless Rigid model for ten dollars more. It came with an interchangeable compact drill and an auto hammer. I would have bought that instead because of the compact power drill and because I have always wanted to try the Rigid products. However, I have no regrets about my purchase. It's the right tool for the job and a quality tool.

 "Initially dissapointed but Provantage service was good" 2010-01-22
By Brian Donner (Seattle, WA)
The PS50-2B was purchased new and within less than one hour of household use it quit. Just dead stopped. It was under warranty and after dealing with a very grumpy service associate at CPO Bosch who directed me to Bosch (I assume corporate customer service, CPO Bosch appears to be internet sales, I opted for a product replacement to get back to my project quickly. Well I received a factory reconditioned unit. I called Bosch again to see what there policy is on replacements "Dan" stated "... the majority of the time a person will receive a new replacement."

It may just be an fluke that my unit failed within the first hour of use but later the representitive Dan called back and offered a NEW replacement for tool which I accepted. So I guess that Bosch does want satisfied customers and are willing to dedicate the extra effort to follow through and please them

 "Keep out of the cold!" 2010-01-22
By K. Sevek (Lawrenceville, NJ)
I have every 12 volt lithium ion tool that Bosch makes, except for the metal shear. I leave the tools in my van when not in use. In the winter time, I have to charge every battery before using them. They loose their charge in the cold. The button on the side of this tool is handy, it lets you know how much power you have left. When my tools come in from the cold, the tool says I have full charge... after about 1 minute of use it says I have no power left, unless I have warm batteries. So my remedy is to take out all 4 of my chargers and all 8 of my batteries and start charging as soon as I pull them out in the morning. This is a very handy tool to have. I also have the corded, very expensive version ($400)made by the other company. this one is nice because you have the freedom of doing the same jobs without the cord (duh). I love it and will not complain about the cold batteries.

 "Very handy tool" 2010-01-06
By M. Ross (Orange, CA USA)
I got this tool a local big box store for significantly less than what is listed on Amazon, but thought a review would be helpful here. Honestly, I would give this five stars if the batteries had just a wee bit more juice.

Having said that, I really like this tool. Basic pros and cons:

Pros:

* Unique tool

* Well made

* Reasonable price

* Good accessories

* Cordless

* Excellent case

Cons:

* Battery life

This tool, as any similar oscillating tool from Fein, Dremel, and others, performs several unique jobs that many other tools cannot. Having had it only a few months, I am surprised at how often I find myself reaching for it. The plunge cut feature is awesome and really lets you get at things you otherwise wouldn't without damaging surrounding material. It is heavy for its size and feels well-made. The price is good, but would be better lower. (Isn't that always the case?) It comes with a useful assortment of accessories in a case that the tool probably doesn't deserve. (I've seen many pricier tools that come with a bag or no carrier at all) The blades that come with it have held up well- as always, you have to be careful what you cut and use the right blade for the material.

The major drawback is battery life. My experience has mirrored that of other users in that the batteries just don't last in this thing- Five to twelve minutes, depending on what I am doing. Is that long enough? It depends. I also regularly use Bosch's excellent little pocket drivers Bosch PS20-2A 12-Volt Max Lithium-Ion Pocket Driver with 2 Batteries so I've got extra batteries on hand, and the charger does a good job of recharging the batteries quickly. I use this tool for many things, but not hours at a time. If I needed to undercut all the door frames in a house to install flooring, for example, I would be using my Crane saw instead, or similar, and not an oscillating tool, even the Fein.

I've used the Fein, and it is terrific- a well made, precision tool. But I chose the Bosch based on its portability, and that's nice when you are in a crawl space or up on a ladder, even if I do have to take along a spare battery or two. This tool isn't meant to replace a circular saw, grinder, or jigsaw- this tool fits nicely in the niche for which it is meant.

For me, the positives of portability and relative lightness of this tool outweigh the drawback of having to change batteries frequently. I recommend this tool, even for frequent use. If you envision yourself using it for hours at a time, consider a corded oscillating tool.

Handy tool to get into places larger tool are unable. The example I most recently had was the repair of a rotary spreader but couldn't get it apart because of bolts coroded and rusted by fertilizer and time. I was able to cut the bolts because of the small size of the tool and was able to get to the bolts and cut them quickly too I would add because of the speed. I have many futue uses for this small and powerful tool.

 "Love it !!!... great value too!" 2010-01-05
By Matt Service (Michigan)
I was originally going to buy a rotary tool and all of the accessories separate. But this package deal has everything I wanted. If you want all the accessories, I recommend this package. I added it all up, and it saved me around $75 compared to buying everything separate. Probably even more if I had to pay shipping on some of the accessories.

There are three things I don't exactly like about it though, but they aren't too bad if you know about them ahead of time.

First, the threads to attach the flex shaft, planer, or finger grip are plastic. I have a very strong grip, and am always twisting things very very tight. I twisted a little too hard when attaching the planer and broke some of the threads on the rotary tool itself (which cannot be replaced without replacing the whole tool by the way). So, just be careful and don't over tighten attachments, and you will be fine.

Second, the tool is surprisingly heavy and is pretty big. It makes it hard to do some of the finer projects I was wanting to do because it's weight and size makes it awkward to handle. But I recommend getting the workstation/drill press to hold the tool while you use the flex shaft attachment. You can use the flex shaft without mounting the tool, but it gets in the way and moves around on the bench while working.

Third, the toolbox it all comes in doesn't really hold everything very well. But that is pretty common with power tools these days isn't it? Anyway, just get yourself a bigger compartmental tool box (or large tackle box), and you will be fine. Just don't get the grey plastic "Dremel 9673 Deluxe Window Rotary Tool and Accessory Storage Case". I purchased it, and it is solid plastic (including hinges) and doesn't hold everything that comes in this kit. It isn't made for accessories, just the tool and a few bits.

One other recommendation is that you shouldn't use it on it's lowest speed setting often. I made the mistake of trying to plane down an edge of a shelf that was sticking out a quarter of an inch on a bookshelf a built. It jumped all over the place at the lowest setting and damaged the shelf. But at the higher speeds, it worked flawlessly, and I was even able to repair my mistake. And remember, let the speed do the work for you, not pressure. Every time I try to add more pressure to make my job go quicker, I end up getting less than perfect results. This tool does the job by its speed. Always remember that, and you will be very happy with this tool set.

(Oh, and shame on the guy who gave three stars and didn't even open the package).

 "Breaks when you look at it" 2010-03-15
By Zogduke
I've been through four Dremel tools in 10 years. So why do I keep coming back? It's all that's out there for a rotary tool. Sears makes one and some other companies, but their's are even less dependable. I've changed the brushes on some of them with replacements from Sears (never seen Dremel offer them). When it works, it's a great tool with a million and one uses. But they just never last long. The push-down catch to loosen attachments stopped worked. BTW, how does this company sleep at night charging those prices for attachments?

 "Dead in 60 seconds." 2010-03-11
By P. Sage (USA)
I purchased this Dremel for a small project and as an "upgrade" from my previous Dremel which is out on loan and still working just fine after 8-9 years. I was using this new unit for at most one minute and the motor completely died. At first I figured the circuit blew, but was surprised to realize that the tool itself quit after how reliable my older model has been. I'm returning this tool to the store and will just wait to get my old one back.

 "Love IT" 2010-02-22
By PaliBob (Pacific Palisades)
I bought the 4000 for more power and for the optional keyless chuck.

I also like that the speed control switch is now separate from the On/Off slide switch.

The new molded case is a big winner as it includes all my other misc accessories. I consider the case as a Must Have next to just the tool alone.

 "Continued Dremel Excellence" 2010-02-15
By J. Robnolt (Sherwood, AR USA)
The name Dremel means quality and this tool is representative of that quality. This tool is a replacement for a fifteen year old tool that finally decided enough is enough. This tool, with the attachments, make it a very handy item in the crafter's toolbox. I recommend it highly.

 "Disappointing" 2010-01-17
By MomToBoys (Atlanta, GA)
I gave this item as a gift for my husband. Unfortunately, the box is missing a small but important piece, the collet. After searching the internet, my husband discovered that lots of dremel's are missing the collet. Apparently, you can purchase this piece for a few dollars at a local hardware store, but I am very disappointed that he cannot use his gift. He is going to contact Dremel, and I will update this review as needed.
