 "good for the money" 2010-05-17
By E. Hays (Sherwood Ar)
a very handy tool for home handyman. I'd recommend a corded tool for the pro who'll use it steadily day in, day out (fein). Lots of uses, even trimming bushes and small limbs and battery makes it so handy. Don't know how long battery lasts as I haven't used it enough to run one down yet.

"cordless tradeoff is worth it for me" 2010-04-09
By Tim Kieschnick
I agonized over whether to go with the cordless Bosch, after all the reviews about its short battery life. But I ended up going for it, and I'm glad I did. The key is what kinds of jobs I use it on.

What I'm finding is that I don't use it for continuous tasks that go on for hours without a break. For me, this is a specialty tool. I use it when my other tools hit their limit--when my random orbit sander won't reach into the corner, or when I need to trim a little off of a window frame, or when my sawzall is too big for a small plunge cut.

So I typically only use this tool for a few minutes at a time, and always with at least 5 or 10 minutes of time between uses--usually much more than that--plenty of time to recharge, especially given that it comes with 2 batteries that are easy to remove.

And I love it being cordless, again because of what I typically use it for. Since I use it when my other tools don't have the precision or finesse, or simply won't fit in the space, it's important that this tool be easy to manipulate, and I really appreciate not having to deal with a cord as I twist into awkward angles and spaces, often on top of a ladder.

Also, since I'm typically using this in conjunction with other tools, it's a real advantage to not have to plug it in each time. For instance, last weekend I was installing some custom windows in a new structure, and I had 3 outlets available, all of which were full with other tools. If my multi-tool were corded, I would have had to unplug something else and plug in the multi-tool each time I needed it. But since it's cordless, I could just pick it up, make the cut, and move on.

 "So far..." 2010-03-23
By M. Rosenberg (CT)
So far, so good. With the grout blade, it did a fine job. I've used the Fein Multimaster many times and we all know of its proven track record, but the price is way out there. The Bosch seems to be up to par, and being cordless is an added plus.

 "very pleased" 2010-03-03
By John W. Orlandella
I have been looking at the multi-tools for quite a while. I chose the Bosh because they make very dependable tools and also because I prefer to work without a mess of cords under foot. I have used it to shave ceiling tiles with ease and also to trim the ceiling channels in place without having to pull every thing apart. If you need to trim an eight of an inch off sheet-rock, it will do it with no mess. I was able to cut away an old cabinet without undoing the drains and plumbing. I can cut hard to reach areas that could never be done with any other tool. This is not going to replace a saws-all and its not going to zip through steel and lumber like one but it will work in tight areas that no other tool will. A week after using mine I saw a cordless Rigid model for ten dollars more. It came with an interchangeable compact drill and an auto hammer. I would have bought that instead because of the compact power drill and because I have always wanted to try the Rigid products. However, I have no regrets about my purchase. It's the right tool for the job and a quality tool.

"Initially dissapointed but Provantage service was good" 2010-01-22
By Brian Donner (Seattle, WA)
The PS50-2B was purchased new and within less than one hour of household use it quit. Just dead stopped. It was under warranty and after dealing with a very grumpy service associate at CPO Bosch who directed me to Bosch (I assume corporate customer service, CPO Bosch appears to be internet sales, I opted for a product replacement to get back to my project quickly. Well I received a factory reconditioned unit. I called Bosch again to see what there policy is on replacements "Dan" stated "... the majority of the time a person will receive a new replacement."

It may just be an fluke that my unit failed within the first hour of use but later the representitive Dan called back and offered a NEW replacement for tool which I accepted. So I guess that Bosch does want satisfied customers and are willing to dedicate the extra effort to follow through and please them

"More solid than I expected" 2009-08-02
By Robert K. Walz
I read a few reviews of the vise being made of plastic and that it wasn't very solid. The reviews gave me low expectations. I didn't want to buy something I'd regret.

At my local home improvement store, I saw and reluctantly tried a display. The solid feel and the range of grasping angles caught me by surprise. I wanted a vise that could bend to fit my projects, this is it. Much impressed by the demo, I took one home right away.

Now realize, this is very compatible with rotary tools in that it's not meant for heavy duty work--like bearing down and ripping through 2x4's. Perhaps 'vice' is a misleading word in that regard--this isn't a hunk of metal bolted to a bench. This is a 'rotary tool multi-vise' which is an accurate description of this product--a multiple position clamp/holder for rotary tool projects.

I've used this vise for wood working projects (custom guitar parts) and cutting bolts and other remodeling work. The vise is absolutely fine, solid, and reliable. The plastic bits are hard molded and there is a fair amount of cast metal. The blue contact pieces of the clamp are the 'soft' pads. Those are removable and give a good amount of cushion and support to hold your project. There is an attachment to mount the tool instead of the clamp. You can also use the clamp independent of the base. The clamp slides along the rail when you hold a release button and squeezes to a firm grip with the knob.

Like I said, I was against this product, but once I tried one it was a perfect match.

 "excellent for light duty" 2009-06-07
By Harry Smith III (nj usa)
first use was to hold a cookoo (sp) clock while i was repairing the ballasts. this was obviously old, and as the vise mounts anywhere, i was able to attach it easily to a table AWAY from everyone else. the vise left no marks afterwards due to its pressure adjustment handle, as this is a wooden clock. so, summary - this is an excellent light duty vise.

I haven't used this a ton yet, but have cut some drywall with it and I think its great. Very easy to take on and off the dremel, very easy to adjust how deep you want the cut too.

Of course you can cut drywall without this tool, but now that I have it and see how easy it is to control the dremel this way, I would not want to go back to not having it

"Dremel does it right again." 2010-01-11
By Brian F. Class (Ashburn, VA USA)
My old dremel finally bit the dust after 30 years of service so I needed a new one. After reading some of the negative comments I was a bit worried about this one, but decided that I would give Dremel my business again since the last one had last so long. I also wanted the flex shaft attachment and the right angle attachment [and that German unit did NOT have a right angle attachment for sale and people really trashed their flex shaft attachment]. Well, so far so good. It is actually quieter then my old one, and I have already used and fallen in love with the right angle attachment - wished I had bought one years ago]. I also wonder how many people that complained about the flex shaft did not run it for two minutes in a vertical configuration before usage each time? Manual says to do that and it helps to work the storage kinks out of it and likely keeps it running cooler with less issues. And the case was built to hold all of that stuff, so I now have it consolidated into one box, even with all my old parts.

Dremel has a keeper here. Oh, and I use mine for making fine details in hard wood, cutting tiles and metal, cutting the occasional lock that has lost its key... etc. A little bit of everything which is what these things can do.

"A little too big but solid performance." 2009-12-15
By greenT (USA)
Many people may be wondering if they should get Dremel 4000 for their holiday gifts and have been looking for detailed reviews so here is my contribution.

I received my Dremel 4000 a month ago and so far used it for moderate work with cutting and shaping sheet metal (soup cans etc) and very light work with drilling and shaping plastic. So far it's been working great. 4000 works fine with all the speed setting as they advertise. It seems like they solved the problem with the lower speed setting. The speed changes in a little increments rather than smooth transitions. In a way, it feels a bit like digital but I see no problem here.

My only complaint is its size and weight. Probably it's OK for rough work but for detailed work it strains my hand after some time (my hands are small). It probably makes sense to invest on flex shaft and foot pedal if you are going to do a lot of detail work with this machine. The engraver's handle that comes with this particular set adds more grip options but it's a bit flimsy so it's only good for very light work.

4000 is a really big machine. It's thicker than XPR and way longer than any previous models I've seen. Probably the speed feedback circuitry and new cooling system required this added size. The balance is quite a bit awkward when I hold the machine like a pen to do detail work. The engraver's handle does not really solve the bad balance either.

In the higher speed, it is quite loud. It gives off high pitch sound like you are in dentist's office even without any tool attached on it. I can stand it but for some people it can be quite annoying. I recommend having earplugs handy. It also blows a lot of air from the vents- I guess it's a good thing for keeping the motor cool.

They say they designed 4000 according to the user feedbacks and I can see they are reflected in everywhere. In doing so it seems like they went back to basics, which I think is the right move. I appreciate they went back to more basic shape and moved away from XPR kind of design. I never used XPR but when I handled it at Home-depot the peculiar body shape felt awkward and tend to limit the way you can hold it.

I can see that there are a lot of thoughts went into the new carrying case as well. I am so happy that they forwent the ridiculously bulky toolbox type case (such as the one came with XPR). It did not only took so much space, its bubbly shape refused to fit in a shelf or stacking any other things on them. Also I did not like that the tools were stored in the fragile plastic box attached outside of the main case. That's asking for disaster. The toolbox tended to break easily and I had to fix it with duct tape or keep the tools inside of the main compartment. Now Dremel 4000 comes in a more standard but nice thin briefcase type case. It slides right into my shelves and does not take up too much space. The toolbox is also stored securely inside of the main compartment. The handle feels nice and the plastic latches on this case also feel pretty sturdy. The only thing I wish it had was a tool block that I can stick tools in for quick access, but this I can make my own by drilling little holes in a wood block and it will be nicer than the one they make with plastic anyways.

I don't like when designers go too creative and forget about functionality in utility tools. I think it is important to stick with "form follows function" philosophy and not the other way. With Dremel 4000 it is apparent that they tired to keep the usability to its first priority.

I am not a big fun of power tools that look like straight out from Star Trek. Why designers these days are so compelled to make rotary tools or even toothbrushes look like tricked out Nike shoes is beyond my comprehension. I miss old tools that looked like tools.

I also looked at the Proxxon and with such good reviews I was almost going to go with it. The reviewers say Proxxon is more solidly build and quieter than Dremel. Even this Dremel's latest model 4000 is still lacking in that department. I've never seen Proxxon myself so I can't say but for me the deal breaker was that the Proxxon's "Professional" model could not take a keyless chuck. A keyless chuck makes so much difference in productivity when you have to change tools often. Also Dremel and their attachments are cheaper and more readily available in US market. Dremel 4000 is not perfect but I think it's performance is solid.

The most important thing to remember using Dremel is not to put too much pressure on it but let it's speed and tool do the job. You have to make a number of light passes rather than try to push it with one shot with your force. I didn't know about this when I was using my first Dremel and only after a few months the motor started spin really loud and hot. Nonetheless it never completely quit working and withstood my 6 years of abuse. This time I will be more careful and hopefully my 4000 lasts longer.

 "Great Cutters" 2009-10-24
By M. Burris
These blades do a great job cutting, been using them to cut panels out of a plywood wall that needed rotting areas removed and then replaced. They can reach into areas that none of my other tools could work in. Just be sure to avoid any nails or screws or they will quickly ware down, use the metal/wood blades for those items. Also if you do wear the teeth off the blade, use your dremel rotary tool to sharpen the front/sides of the blade and use it as a scraper.
